Standalone GPS Tracker logger

This post deals with a gps tracker you ring and it sends back its coordinates

http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,57976.0.html

I don't want to ring it to get GPS data

I want to operate it all from a battery and store wherabouts to an SD card every hour or three. No GSM required. I want to track my car /truck and where it goes Only want to store the Date/Time, Location & Speed

Anybody done this or planning to or any other leads to save reinventing the wheel ?

Thanks -I remembered now I did see that some time back but did you see the power consumptions Approximate run times: 3 hours on a 9V battery and up to 12 hours with a MintyBoost

That makes it virtually unuseable for my purposes . I need it to turn on , record data then turn off for 1 to 3 hours then do it again and again with a battery life of weeks not hours !

It is a good starting point though and they do point you in the power saving direction I just don't think this will cut it as a standalone unit . I could wire it into the car but thats not what I want.

Cost is the other consideration- the arduino +the shield +gpsmodule +SD card and holder(I envisaged the mini SDHC type holder and card

How about this one then? http://wyolum.com/shop/20-i2gps.html It "has" the Arduino on board already.

That car/truck has a big battery, doesn't it?

Thanks florinc Theirs is coming -they posted that in about april 2012 http://wyolum.com/?p=795 "GPS Disciplined RTC By wyojustin On April 17, 2012" but it looks like I can get something from it shortly perhaps

The criticism on this board by some is annoying Why post if you have nothing constructive to add It says "Standalone" meaning everything on the board

I wonder what that means.
