Standalone / Offline programmer help

I am trying to program some arduino like boards I made with a standalone / offline isp programmer.

I bought a Selfrog standalone isp programmer. I'm struggling to get anywhere with it.

Using Atmel studio 7 i can read/write fuses and lock bits to the selfrog but it can not write to either flash or eeprom, i get this error. The Selfrog ad does not specifically say it works or doesn't with Atmel studio 7.

I have tried to find links to download atmel studio 6 but only found sketchy looking ones. I attempted to try it on a second machine, Atmel studio 7 is not cooperating, wont install.

The other option listed was to use avrdude to write to the selfrog. I can not find any info on how to do this.

Any BTDT loading / writing to a selfrog or similar standalone isp programmer? Can anyone link me to a how to load one? 2nd day searching and trying things with no real progress.

I offer one that runs code Nick Gammon developed.
