is there a good starter guide out there for those of us who have no hardware/software experience with this? including a list of what to buy.

adafruit.com has a starter kit. If it is too expensive, just look at the parts and check other sources.
a breadboard, some leds + resistors, buttons, pots, wires + wirecutter are always nice to have.
