i recently bought 4 16ft led light kit strips.. im returning them because from my understanding they were not the right kind...

Search ebay for "ws2812b strip" - that's the stuff you need.
You'll see that they're available with different spacing between the LEDs - you'll have to pick what's right for you, considering how much length you want - bearing in mind that your power supply needs to be able to supply 1 amp per 20ish LEDs, and each LED takes 3 bytes of SRAM in your arduino program to store the state of the pixel, and that long strings are slower to refresh.
