Hi all, what I'm trying to do is replace a stepper with a bigger one. I have a small device called a turnspro, that is used to turn a camera to do such things as time-lapse. The problem is the stepper is one of those small 5v ones with a 3mm shaft, and it stalls with a large camera. Is it possible to take the four wires the stepper and boost though another board or driver board to driver a bigger one? I was thinking of a nema 17 with a biggest power supply. Hopefully someone knows how to interface with the original stepper?
If you are presently using a unipolar 28BYJ stepper motor then you will almost certainly need a different stepper driver for a Nema 17 motor as they are usually bipolar.
The trouble is the turnspro device stepper motor screws directly into the tripod mount. But with larger lenses its makes it front heavy and motor stalls, so it balance which is the problem.

Why would you try to solve a balance problem with a larger motor? If your camera mounts using a screw mount, just add a thin metal plate with room to add balance weights to the back side. Add weights till the motor doesn't stall.
A larger motor may still stall. You have to solve the problem, not use a bigger hammer!
