stepper motor finding home position

I have a stepper motor application where I need the motor to be able to rotate 360+ degrees, but I also need to know the precise position at any given time. I could use an absolute encorder, but that seems overkill. I just want a simple solution where I can easily find the home position and use it as reference when I turn the power on. I'm thinking maybe an optical encoder that only has one slot? I can't seem to find anything like that, but I would image they exist somewhere. Or is there some better solution? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,

Common solutions are:

An optical sensor with a single hole/slot or tab to sense.
A physical switch with a notch or tab to sense.
A hall-effect switch with a magnet to sense.

Once you seek to the 'home' position you just have to keep track of steps to know where you are.

Yes, that i what I want. Where do I buy one?

Here's one:

That's just a sensor. I need something to sense. Like a disc with a signal slot or something like that.

A cardboard disc? Or a plastic one made from a milk-bottle top?

A switch you can get from radio shack.
