Whilst debugging an ESP8266 D1 Mini program, a strange (active) graph appeared. I am using the Arduino environment on a pi 400.

You launched the serial plotter program, rather than the serial monitor.
OMG! I've been using the IDE for a number of years and didn't even know of it's existence, let alone the Menu entry! Apologies for wasting folks time, and thanks for your rapid reply jremington.
