Strip Boadrd Serial Audino (stand alone)

Was having a look for a stand alone Stripboard Arduino plan yesterday, and as i couldnt find one, I played around and came up with this.

(this is my first ever circuit so im sure there are flaws and better ways to do it, but thought it may be a good starting point? please re-work and repost! :slight_smile: )

IC 1 = 7805 Voltage regulator
R2 = 220 Ohm resistors
R1 = 10k Ohm resistor
C1 = 10 uF capacitors
C2 = 10 uF capacitors
Q1 = 16 MHz clock crystal
C3 = 22 pF capacitors
C4 = 22 pF capacitors
X1 = DB9 connector
LED 1 = LED

Running "Blink" sketch

Good stuff! Did you use a CAD program to lay out the strip-board? And if you did, what program was it? Looks like a useful thing to know about!

I made an Arduino-like gadget on strip-board, although it doesn't have a bootloader, and is programmed with an AVR in-system programmer. Photos are on Flickr, here: ATmega8 board | Flickr

Nope, just drew it out on paper, made it, then drew it up on photo shop (at witch point i started to notice all the ways i could have trimmed it down in size and work! Mk2 will be alot smaller!)

Really like what you have done using the 16 female pin headers, will be nicking that trick!

could do with finding a way around fitting ISP onto stripboard.

Not the only one !!!!

I guess that is the problem with strip board it`s hard to install anything like the isp header socket where the pins are too close.

I could only think off getting some sort of convertor board.

Glad you liked the dual row headers! They're a form of DIN 41612 connector, but I suspect that you'll not like 'em so much when you see the price... I got a small pile of them from an old company where we used them inside the sonar tow-fish. You can get cheaper dual-row headers from Farnell, in black:

As for the stripboard and the ISP connector, it's actually "triple pad board" from Maplin's. The strips are only three holes long, then there's a gap, then another three hole strip, then a gap, and so on.

Great stuff, I was poking round looking for such a resource, but wasn't brave enough to start building without one.

I've been using proto/strip board for my wee projects, and find it is pretty flexible, my soldering skills have moved from terrible to poor, and I've been learning a lot about paths of least resistance.

Being able to produce my own Ghettodunio from stuff I can pick up at Jaycar would be very cool.

A good protoboard design, allowing people to build their own boards without needing specific PCB's would be a great resource to the community.

I`ve built my first compact strip board design which is lacking any means of reprogramming.

I will have to try using a triple pad board so I can use a isp header socket, and get more room to add more chips for a larger full working project .

awesome :slight_smile: i made a couple of custom compacts myself

here's my 1st, pic is a bit crap tho.

AtMega168 with lilipad bootloader (note lack of osc or crystal)

the pins at the top are: analog row top left, digital row just under, and 4 sets of power at the top right next to the digital row.

the pins at the bottom are power and ttl.

the wires are threaded tight thru the board for strength.

i dont have a board layout plan for it showing the tracks side tho.

it works like a charm tho :slight_smile:

Here is my minimal version of arduino on a protoshield.

It has the Atmega 328 on it.
Ugly, but it is compatible with all arduino shields I have.
The extra components found on a normal arduino have been eliminated to save power in sleep mode.

one version (i don't have final pictures)

minimal with 2x 595s
