Student kit arduino Uno R3 not responding

A few weeks ago I ordered a student kit directly from the Arduino site and now that I want to use it, it doesn't work. When I plug the uno in with the USB-cable (that came with the kit) it turns on ( a green light and orange light lit up). But the arduino IDE doesn't find any ports, also neither of my 2 laptops make a noise when I plug in the arduino and it also doesn't show up in my device manager. Does this mean that my uno is broken or am I forgetting something?

You need to insert the USB cable fully into the Uno. I can see from the picture that it is not. This can result in the power connections being made (and thus LED lights on the board), but no data connections (and thus no port for the board).
