Stupid LED Tricks with a 74HC595

I've been working my way through various tutorials, and finally got around to playing with shift registers.

Question for people, what's the difference between the 74HC595 (http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ShiftOut) and the 4794 (http://www.arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/LEDDriver)? They seem very similar.

My local electronics shop had 595s in stock, so I did this little project with those.

They are very similar.

However the 74HC595 can source or sink 25mA where as the 4794 can sink 40mA (couldn't find source figure but likely to be lower.)

i have done this recently too. Maybe ill post my video :3 i used the max7219 and a dot matrix array and made a marquee

The pleasure we all get from little blinking lights. It's great. Brings a tear to my eye ;)
