Someone who freely admits in public to being a drunken oaf, is not going to attract a lot of sympathy. As you say, the whole point of this assignment is to learn, the finished product is far less relevant. It's the same as when I took Maths O level, we had to show our calculations in the margin to prove we knew HOW to do it, not just supply an answer.
The problem here is that the drunken oaf will still be a drunken oaf the following year too.
It is better to travel hopefully, than to arrive.
