This first prototype does not have traces between the pads but that is definitely what I am putting in the next version. I like the double sided idea too.
The soldering on this was, lets just say interesting. It really needs soldermasking!
Was this a homebrew PCB, or did you send it off to a shop? For double-sided boards, you will probably want to send it off to a shop, because double-sided PCB etching isn't easy (mainly the transfer of the artwork is the problem, from what I understand). Add the masking, and plated-thru-hole vias - it sounds like a nice board.
I've never done -any- SMT work, but it has always been something I've wanted to try my hand at.
