Surface reader device

Hello there!

I have an idea for a dice/coin/fingerprint reader.

The idea is a glass surface, about 20x20 cm, with back-light, and a small camera that reads the face on the glass.

Does anyone know a camera module that can work for this, as I want the whole thing to be as low profile as possible.

Basically a focal distance of <5cm, and enough clear image for the area.

Or if anyone has any idea how I can accomplish my idea.
The processing of the image is not vital for now.

Glass has two surfaces, believe it or not. Both are reflective, so taking a picture through glass requires the camera to be exactly 90 degrees to the glass surface or you will also photograph the reflections. Your back light will show as two lights included in the photograph.

Any camera module with an appropriate lens and focus for that distance. Quality and price vary substantially.

Test your design using your smart phone camera! It is 1,000 times better than any Arduino type camera.

Thanks!
Is there another approach? Maybe som sort of phototransistor? Or is there a component that can read an tight array of dots with either color or distance with narrow

My idea was if I put them in a grid, to expand the area

you need to define the resolution that you are seeking. Its a lot more for a fingerprint than for a die.
