Switch Mode Regulator Diode Options

In past project I have used the LM2596 switching mode regulator. My project requires at times 2A (3.3V) and this regulator seems to have been doing the job like a champ.

The diode in the attached schmatic is the 1N5825. The problem I have with this diode is that it is absolutely massive and on mouser is $42. I would like to find a replacement diode but am unsure as to what parameters really mater. I am looking at the SS34 but would be more than happy to hear of one that is small (not too small 0805 or larger (I have fat fingers  )) and cheap.

Not worth it to make your own switching supplies.
On ebay you can find complete LM2596 boards, including diode, for ~US$1 (free shipping).
Leo..

Any Schottky diode that has the required current rating will work.

And a reverse-breakdown voltage higher than the input voltage.

Thanks guys that is what I needed to hear!

Already have one..... This is only true if you are trying to hodgepodge something together. The is a printed complete solution. Thanks for the help again.
