Tall Break Beams

Hi All,

I'm looking to position two sets of break beams or similar about 1FT apart to calculate the speed of an object going through it. It would need to be up to 3 ft high and have beams about 2CM apart at a minimum - I do not need to know if it hit a upper beam or a lower beam. Using the exact time each beam was broken, I should be able to get a very accurate speed.

What would be the best way to approach this given the height requirement?

Updated Diagram:

Use suitable supports? Why should height make a difference to the Arduino circuit?

Sorry I wasn't clear - I'm trying to see if there is a sensor that is available somewhere that is 'tall'. Otherwise to cover 3ft (~90cm) for an object ~2cm, I would need 45 sensors (x2 for a pair to figure out sped) and was hoping for a less complicated solution.

Would it be correct to say you don't know the height at which a small object will pass through a 3 foot tall window?

Correct- ideally the width of the sensors is about 10ft

Do you mean like a shadow chronograph?

Would it be correct to say you want to detect a small (~2 cm) object that passes anywhere through a 10 ft wide, 3 ft tall window?

If so, at what speed?

Yes, about 60mph / 100kmh max

I would position the sensors a known distance apart to measure speed and then once it travels a certain distance (20-30ft) trigger another device.

I can draw it out in a few hours when I get to a computer

That is quite a challenge! And let me guess: this is outdoors, in full sunlight.

Indoors is great, but outdoors would be nice too

Light curtains exist off the shelf, but be prepared for sticker shock. They are not cheap. You're better off DIY'ing this.

Attached a diagram here. Note in the diagram I mentioned 1ft, but ideally would be 3ft.

I did see the light curtains, and I will reach out to that vendor. I just need 2 so would be open to a little higher cost if it solves the problem.
