Tamiya 72101 Gear Head Motor + Arduino Motor Shield

Hi, I want to make a sumo robot using arduino but I am new to electronics so I was wondering if I can use these motors: Pololu - Tamiya 72101 Gear Head Motor + Sponge Tire Set with the Arduino Motor Shield. If they are not a good solution can you tell me some motors that I can use?

PS: the robot will have 3kg and should be able to push out of the ring a 3kg opponent

The page quotes those motors as being able to power a 10lb robot, ie 4kg. Driving one 3kg robot that is pushing another 3kg robot (presumably against tyre static friction) sounds like a lot more force is needed (as well as grippier tyres than the opponents...)

Of course you can overdriver a motor for short periods as a way to get more power from it (at the expense of increased wear and heating).

Some research into what works (in terms of power and torque) for others for the same class of robots would be useful data - worth searching around a bit.

You can't use 10Amp motors with the Arduino motor shield.

Not only that, but those motors seem like an extreme rip-off, money wise! One motor, a bracket, a wheel, plus assorted parts - for $100.00+ USD?! Seriously? I've seen entire used electric wheelchairs for that amount (less even!).

The OP should investigate other alternatives, or all his budget will go into motors and wheels; there are tons of better solutions out there (and since this is for a competition robot - if possible the OP should investigate surplus sources, ebay, etc).

I still can't believe that price (heck, it's not even a Pittman motor!)...
