Tank controls with Tamiya motors

Apologies if this has already been asked, it seems like such an obvious question I'm not sure the best way to phrase it. I'm trying to create a 2-track style tank control with an arduino and have an Arduino kit from DF robot ( DFRduino_Beginner_Kit_For_Arduino_V3_SKU_DFR0100-DFRobot) along with 2 tamiya micro motors (no.188 if that helps) and what's currently got me stumped is the best way to be able to get the motors to be able to go in either direction. using a relay I can get a motor to be able to switch between an on and off state, but I confess I'm not sure the best method for having 3 states (a forward, stop, and backwards). I could use 4 relays, but I wanted to see if there was an easier way first or if that's the best?

You also need a pair of DPDT relays to reverse the motor connections!

do you have a particular brand or type you'd recommend?

Recommend the same brand of relay modules that you are currently using. You still need it to turn the motor power on and off. Make sure the new ones are double pole, double throw, DPDT.

Any particular reason you want to go with relays instead of a motor driver like the L298N?

what's a motor driver? If that makes more sense by all means I'm down to do that instead

It makes a lot more sense. Look into them.
