I needed to make a microphone extension to a tape recorded for an interactive installation, it worked a few times but when I wanted to record again I found out that the tape recorder died. It won't even play. I didn't touch anything on it except for the 2 mic cables. Could you please help me out?
This is the Arduino forum …
Anyhow .. it’s impossible to diagnose what has gone wrong with your tape machine without actually seeing it .
Did you just extend the cable to the mic socket ? That shouldn’t be an issue , if you’ve had the lid off ( I guess you did ) you might of shorted something out or broken a connection.
Check for broken wires and or bad batteries. Other then that goo luck.
The microphone and its wiring should not cause the tape deck to die. I used to repair tape machines and bad soldering is the first thing to look for. Next is the power switches.
I see several bad solder joints on the tape deck PC board. Check the soldering to the power switch (two red wires), you might have moved them with the mic wiring. The jumper by your finger tip is not soldered.
The microphone capsule can is connected to ground so if it touches power there will be sparks due to the short circuit.
Is this one of those really old cassette recorders that had a 3.5mm mono jack for the microphone, and a 2.5mm jack for the remote, both moulded into a single connector, a bit like an old aeroplane headphone jack?
Maybe ESD?
