How does the TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor differ from a typical photocell?

It is just a photo transistor. It has a response that is close to that of the eye, it's in a package that is convenient for that sort of applications and has a directional response that is very even. It also has a logarithmic response that closely matches that of the eye.
