First step is to identify the LCD driver chip and find out if it's an HD44780 compatible. I don't think you'll get very far in testing without some sort of microcontroller to drive it.

whats the best and cheapest LCD screen i can get in the uk, i was looking at connecting a nokia screen but i cant find wireing diagrams anywhere
What kind of LCD screen do you want? Text or graphics? Colour or mono?
