I am very green. Didn't realize all the configuration issues associated with this board. I found what appears to be a good tutorial and trying to work through it. Setting switches 1-7 of 8 appears to be crucial to getting it set up. However, the switches on this particular board are extremely difficult to set. Is anyone aware of a version of this board that has easy to set switches?
I moved your topic to an appropriate forum category @tech_lemming .
In the future, please take some time to pick the forum category that best suits the subject of your topic. There is an "About the _____ category" topic at the top of each category that explains its purpose.
This is an important part of responsible forum usage, as explained in the "How to get the best out of this forum" guide. The guide contains a lot of other useful information. Please read it.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
I took quite a bit of time looking for a hardware category for the Mega 2560 with WiFi. I couldn't find one. I read the about the category. The Giga Hardware category is the closest I could find to the Mega. Which forum category did you move the topic to? Are you a moderator?
You should only use the GIGA R1 category for topics that are about the GIGA R1 WiFi board. The category should not be used for topics about other boards.
I moved it to the Hardware category.
The category of a topic is shown under the title:
Yes.
Use a small screwdriver (watchmaker screwdriver).
I see what you are refereeing to, Thanks, It appears Microcontollers would be a bit more specific category as the product is an MCU with a built in ESP8266 module. Can you assist me with how I can move the topic to Microcontrollers?
I have found a lot of google hits directing to me to the arduino forum and quite a few not so well done tutorials. Many people seem to be struggling with the board. As I said I found a useful video but before I return this version of the board to amazon and swap it for another one, I am simply asking if anyone has purchased a version with better quality dip switches.
Thanks again.
Microcontrollers would be a reasonable choice, but Hardware is better so we will leave it where it is.
Thanks, I am using an electronics screwdriver set with several different options, and I am doing it under a magnifying glass. I'm thinking there must be a version with better implemented dip switches. If that is not the case I'm sending it back and taking another approach at a hardware setup. Before I reconfigure all the hardware including a terminal shield and a TFT shield I just want to know if anyone has had better luck with a MEGA plus WIFI from a different manufacturer. I've spent a ton of time searching tutorials. This video seems pretty good for my skill level. Haven't figured out how to post an image on the forum yet but at 52 seconds into this video the dip switches and various configurations are shown. Those are much easier to see than the ones on the version I have.
For future reference can a user change categories if they feel they need to? Now that I am aware of the category tag I noticed several of the post regarding various versions of the board are listed in the microcontroller category which seems to me to be more specific than hardware.
thanks again
Yes, but please don't change the category of this topic as it is already in the most appropriate category.
The forum maintainers do our best to keep things correctly categorized, but it is impossible to keep up on such an active forum. So you will find many cases of topics that are not in the optimum category. Just because you find a topic in a category doesn't mean that all other topics on related subjects should be placed in that category.
Your question is about the board as a whole. It has absolutely nothing to do with the microcontroller on the board, so putting the topic in the Microcontrollers category would not make sense.
I don't mean to be argumentative, but my question has everything to do with the microcontrollers on the board. The dip switches are set in different configurations depending on which of the three microcontrollers on the board are being flashed and then ultimately set to facilitate communications between the microcontrollers. 52 seconds into the video I posted shows one of dip switch settings. There ae several. One of the things people struggle with most is setting the dip switches correctly to access the microcontrollers.
In my case I think I may have gotten a board with poorly implemented switches. I only bought one so I don't have a basis of comparison. In photos most of them appear to be white. Mine are yellow. I tried from midnight to about 4am in the morning to get them set for various operations without ever being sure if they were in the off or on positions. If one can't get the dip switches right before flashing or running sketches, nothing works. A good catch in this video is she emphasizes pushing the mode switch after every change. No one has mentioned that on the forum. I was successful in setting 4 and 5 with a screwdriver from an Electonics set which allowed me to flash the blink sketch to the AT2560 microcontroller but was never sure if I had them right after that.
If my topic is left in hardware it looks like it will be the only topic on this board in "Hardware". It seems most people are posting in "Project Guidance" or "Microcontrollers"
Thanks Again.
But you are being argumentative.
Consider that you have been a forum member for three hours, and have already shown poor judgement in category selection. Now consider that I have been a forum member for over a decade, and manage this forum. Ask yourself which of us is more likely to be correct on this subject?
You are harming your chances of getting effective assistance by derailing the topic.
It does not.
That is incorrect. There are thousands of topics in the Hardware category.
No Pert, I would have preferred for you to recommend options for categories I could choose from instead of moving me to a very generic category. As I said the most obvious category would have been Arduino Mega 2560, like Arduino GIGA RT. Quite a few people have implemented EMS8266 modules with them and that is the category I would have looked for and did. As a matter of fact while you were chastising me about categories I found a video off the forum that fill in a few more blanks about flashing the rom. On this particular board it is a matter of setting the dip switches correctly for the for the operation being attempted on the particular microcontroller. No other posts I have seen posted questions regarding this board under hardware.
I have been following post on the board for a while, but was not focusing on categories. I was instead focusing on trying to solve the issues I am having. I have become aware of categories since you brough it to my attention. Has it occurred to you that even though I have only been on the board three hours you may have made a mistake in moving my post to "hardware" without politely telling me you thought Giga R1 was not the right category, looking to see what other categories people have used and asking me which of those I would like to move the topic to? Polite is a two way street.
If you don't like the way the forum is managed, feel free to move along somewhere else.
I have better things to do with my time than debate this further with you.
What I am having problems with is the way you came at me at assuming I did not attempt to find a more appropriate category. I have a problem with you telling me you moved it to another category without telling me where you moved it. I also have a problem with you telling me the dipswitches have nothing to do with the microprocessors. I tried to respond politely, but your demeanor is not helpful, it is overbearing king Pert.
