Bourns PEC11R and PEC12R or example, which are under $2 at Digikey....about the same as a pot, I would think. Neither would let you adjust easily to a specific setting.

Thanks Sherman. Coincidentally, I actually have the PEC12R from another project - they are great, but as you said, same as a pot for specific setting. The pot will outperform for fine un-referenced settings (while consuming more power) I is looking like polling a pot has the best assortment of tradeoffs.

Are you fine with the current draw for a small LED?

Thanks for the suggestion, and for thinking outside the box with the cool mouse-wheel idea. However, the emitter and sensor in that arrangement would result in untenable power consumption.
