it uses one of those parallax ping sensors horizontally to read hand movement/convert it into a MIDI note range specified by the "transpose" and "range" knobs.
the infrared can send 3 different controls, either individually or simultaneously: ccs 1, 2, and 7. independent minimum and maximum values can be set for these values.
the ping sensor can also be used for pitch bend if the center knob is all the way to the right. minimum and maximums can be set for pitch bend as well.
very good job there. Does it use real MIDI or USB only? (i cant tell but they it looks like there might be some MIDI jacks on the side panel.)
