Thumb Joystick, LED selection

Hello everybody,
I need help in compiling a code able to select 1 out of 4 LEDs using a thumb joystick.
This prototype should work like a menu selection, in which I have several alternatives (LEDs) and I need to select one of them. In theory I need only one axis, moving on the left I choose, moving on the right I select.
I'm really stuck on it.

You are not giving us much to go on and the picture does not help at all. What type of joystick is that, for instance, and how do you read data from it ?
