Tiny display for Leonardo (< 85 × 25 mm)?

For addition to an Arduino controlled keyboard, I'm looking for a display with the following characteristics.

Required:

  • Maximum footprint of complete assembly: 85 × 25 mm
  • Able to display monochrome graphics.
  • Compatible with a Leonardo.
  • Thin assembly, possibly SMD.

Nice to have:

  • Low energy consumption.
  • Deep black background.
  • Ability to display graphics.
  • No more than 5 or possibly 6 pins that need to be controlled. If there are more pins, I could use a shift register.

Not necessary:

  • Color: monochrome is enough
  • Fast switching: video or fast animations will not be displayed

Any recommendations, suggestions?

Check the displays at www.newhavendisplay.com, especially the serial displays. Only need a couple of pins to control those.

I already had a look at Newhaven displays, but all that I've found exceed the size limitations for the assembly. Why do they need to make the boards so much bigger than the displays?

Only need a couple of pins to control those.

That's just a nice to have, not a must have. If there are too many pins, my plan is to use a shift register.

Just found an article mentioning two tiny displays. More suggestions are welcome!

I now found a [display assembly by Adafruit](Monochrome 128x32 SPI OLED graphic display : ID 661 : $17.50 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits Details) which should be straight forward to use. The PCB matches the size constraints, though the display itself is extremely small. A slightly larger display would be nice.

Anyhow, at least in the case of Adafruit, I could prototype with their PCB, and later - for miniaturization - I could just obtain the display component separately from somewhere else.

See above. I'd like one where the display component is bigger.

They indeed do have a good size and seem easy to mount, albeit not being OLED (which would be nice).

Hmmm, OLED, maybe this:

Perhaps do an image search for "oled 128x32". It will give a lot of results.

Thanks! Except for the PCB, this looks very similar to the Adafruit one.

I wouldn't mind double size and double resolution in all directions. The problem with image search is that I cannot see the physical dimensions. I've tried it already, but I may do so again, perhaps with "oled 256x64".

I have used the Newhaven COG displays in a number of projects with very good results, nice contrast level, low power consumption, fast wakeup from sleep.

The other I like are the C0220 series from Newhaven too and you can use them with or without the plastic mount support (once soldered on board they will not move a bit).

I suppose by plastic mount support, you mean these little plastic ears. Well, even without them, the board is just a bit too wide, at: 27 mm

Also, I am still hoping for an OLED version. LCD looks so old fashioned. The 128×64 one by Adafruit may actually work when mounted without PCB.

Yep they are a fraction over your specs but nice LCD any way.
