Tiny range sensors (0-80 cm), do they exist? can I create my own?

I am building a small robot, 10x10 cm, and I need to measure the distance (~0-80 cm) so I need a couple of range sensors. The two common options seem to be either the IR sensors from Sharp (e.g. GP2Y0A21YK0F) or an ultrasonic sensor (e.g. HC-SR04). Given that my robot is small I find these sensors rather bulky, especially if I want to use several of them. This makes me wonder if there are any smaller alternatives? How feasible would it be to create PCB + casing + IR transceiver/receiver and make it very small with reliable performance? I guess it might be difficult to get the optics right?

There are these. If the breakout board is too big I guess you could order bare chips and fab your own board.

Ah, that one looks very nice indeed!
