Tracking sideways motion

I'm about to start a project.

I'd like to track an object's coordinates.

For example if I move my object up 30 cm in the air. I'd like to see the approximate value (+30 change) on the Y axis. So I'm only interested in the relative coordinates (according to the start of the motion).

What sensor(s) should I use for this project?

Let me know your ideas and advices.

Is the object classified?

Barometers go down to that kind of resolution. Like the BMP280.

That'd be the up direction, which would be the Z axis.

Can you measure to a fixed base, like with a camera or pivoting arm?

Consumer grade IMU hardware like used in drones and cameras for stabilization quickly develop errors measured in kilometers when used for this kind of sensing.
