I was wondering what type of sensor would be the best to determine the location of an item on a table. I was looking to rfid tags and having 5-6 readers and triangulating using signal strength but have had several people tell me it won't work but not offer up any solutions. It would have to be accurate down to an inch or two and compact.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Your title says "multiple" items, body says "an" item.... Which is it?
With literally one item, a network of laser or IR beams could be made to do the trick. Many years ago Xerox had a pseudo touch screen that worked that way: a network of beams in the bezel criss-crossed the screen and detected where your finger was.
That may even work for multiple items.... although if they were touching they might appear as one item.

Well it's not a pre-requisite to know of something that will work, just to be able to say say something won't. I'm a shit carpenter but I know a wobbly table when I see one.
Sorry I was unclear, it would be multiple items.
