Hi! I was thinking of making a small 3d printed tracked (about 30×25×15cm) robot only with a body in between the tracks so that if it flips, it could continue working.
I was wondering about what type of motor I should get. Do you guys have any good ideas or manufacturers in range of 25-75$? I suppose they'll either be BLDC or Steppers, as there is high torque (which will be assured by gearboxes) and high current needed, less likely Steppers as there isn't exact positioning required.
Also, to add more power to it I will add some gearboxes. Will this increase the motor current consumption? Like a 50:1 Reduction ratio ( very slow, but powerful)
You don't want steppers, as you are realising. You don't need the precision and steppers are not high torque.
Gearboxes do not add more power. They trade off speed for higher torque. If anything, they reduce the power slightly by wasting a small part of the power because of the extra friction they introduce.
Not necessarily. It might even decrease the current a little. But the current will have to flow for longer time to achieve the same goal. So the energy used overall will be the same (or maybe a little more because of that additional friction).
Yeah, then I guess BLDC would be the best go to, and thanks for the information regarding gearboxes! Do you know any reputable manufacturer for these motors in the price range mentioned above?
DigiKey.com and Mouser.com have a 'parametric search' feature where you put in what characteristics you want and they show a list of matching products. On DigiKey they have two BLDC Gearmotors under $75:
