Traffic counters

hello everyone,

my interest is to build a traffic counter as a academic project . this traffic counters will be placed at each of the roads at the junction and these counters are connected to the central microcontroller and the central microcontroller will control the RED,GREEN values that has to be given to the appropriate signals.
I have seen many sites showing piezoelectric tubes, inductive loops and pressure hoses.
i also saw about the usage of ultrasonic and infrared sensors.

I am in a confusion what to choose and how to proceed . please explain.

Anything can be done if you throw enough money at it. The sensors are available but it depends on how much you have to spend.

yes i need to finish it within 100 dollars

That is not much to spend.

You could use a magnetometer to detect a change in magnetic field as the vehicle passes overhead.

You would need to read the background level, the level of traffic in adjoining lanes and hence work out if the change is due to a vehicle in your lane.
