Thingspeak already has services that they charge for. Nobody can deny that the free services they also have may be charged for at some unspecified, and by no means certain, time in the future, but that is a pretty dumb reason for not using it now.
I don't think it's "dumb" to not to want to have to do something twice.
It is called considering the pros and cons.
In addition, I think of setting up my own server as a learning experience.
It may not go right, but if I learn something than it is a win situation.
