Further to ThingSpeak, I see that, if you use their calculator for determining the license category, and choose one device with an update message every 15 seconds, they recommend you take up their free license. The message can carry eight values, so that seems pretty comprehensive.
And not too much of a stretch either. They also have a forum on MIT Android for the other end, including control commands.
