Translate the sound to light

Hello everyone!

I'm working with Arduino recently, and I have a work to do but I can't figure out how to do it. My idea is design a device with a microphone to capture sound and translate the "waves" to LED's (light) , but not a light "scale", just "on/off". I expected find a simple way to do it. Does anyone have any idea how to help?

Thanks to read this! ;)

Yes, sometime like that.

But I just want Arduino because (besides that "threshold" effect you mentioned), I want to add some plus effects like, if the interval between the action on and off is more longer the light will be green, if the interval between the action on and off is more short the light will be red (In this case I'll need a rgb LED, of course). I think for this I really need Arduino (like you said) or not?

Ok, thank you for advice!

Do you know any simple exemples where I can see those functions that I mentioned? (With or without Arduino). Because I don't have much experience with electronic systems.
