triggering video playback on rPi using RFID

I have a project that I'm working on and would love any help, pointers, advice, etc. I have some experience with Arduino, but not much with rPi beyond flashing an SD with PiMAME for kicks.

Basically, I want to have video playback triggered on the rpi when a correct RFID is read. There are multiple objects in the instilation but only one will trigger the playback. I figured the arduino would be better at interfacing with the RFID readers (these ones ). I got these logic level converters as well: 8-channel Bi-directional Logic Level Converter [TXB0108] : ID 395 : $7.95 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits
I want there to be some video playing all the time, and have the 'active' video play when the right conditions are met (rfid reads correct tag).
I'd also like to have the video turn off if the object is removed prior to the video finishing

What are the first steps towards this? Am I crazy?

Sounds like a fun project! The way I’d go about it, is get a serial connection between the Arduino and Pi. Then, I’d use PyGame on the Pi side, to both read the serial from the Arduino, and play the video. There’s a good example of the PyGame <-> Arduino communication in this article:

I can’t speak much to the RFID side of things, but it looks like you’re on the right path with getting a breakout RFID reader board. And good call on the logic level converter, the TXB0108 is one of my favs, and a lot of people forget this very important part. FWIW, if you use the new Arduino Due you don’t need one.
