Trouble powering a DC motor with the L293D & arduino UNO

Hey all,

My components:

  • arduino UNO
  • 4.5V DC motor
  • L293D chip
  • 9V battery
  • 3 AA battery pack (4.5V)

I am having trouble getting the motor to run at 4.5V. Right now while connected to the arduino and the chip it only gets up to around 2.5V.

I am powering the setup using batteries, using the 9V battery to give power to the UNO(Vin) and the chip(pin 16(+V)). The 4.5V battery pack is connected to the chip to power the motor (pin 8 (+Vmotor)).

Thanks in advance,
Eran

The 293 has an inherent voltage drop that you can’t escape. So stick about 6V into pin 8 as VCC2.

The L293D and L298 motor drivers both use darlington output stages which lose 2 to 2.5V, making
them rather unsuitable for low voltage use. MOSFET motor drivers are much better for low voltage.
