trouble uploading to mega 2560

I can upload to UNO but not the MEGA. I have Windows 7 and Arduino 1.6.7

I chose MEGA 2560 under Tools.

I read that mega might need to burn the bootloader, but when I tried I got an error that said 'did not find a usb device'. The MEGA was plugged in to computer at a USB port.

From troubleshooting; 'On Windows, it's probably COM1 or COM2 (for a serial board) or COM4, COM5, COM7, or higher (for a USB board) - to find out, you look for USB serial device in the ports section of the Windows Device Manager.'

I went to device manager and found Ports (COM & LPT). Under that was Communications Port (COM 1) and USB-SERIAL CH340 (COM 3)

Am I correct that COM 3 should be chosen no matter what board I happen to use?

Any help getting the MEGA working would be appreciated.

Just thought I'd bump this one time.

Does the bootloader seem likely to be the trouble?

Is the MEGA 2560 prone to problems like this?
