Trouble with serial port using Arduino IDE and Raspberry Pi 400

Hey guys, 100% very first post ever on here, or any other forum for that matter! Anyway, I recently purchased a raspberry pi 400 to use for projects with my 14 year old. Otherwise, I basically just use a tablet when im not working. For most things the Pi does fine; perfectly suited to browsing and coding. However, i can not get the serial ports to work if my life depends on it. I know with windows, I would need drivers, but with this I am alarmingly lost. So im just wondering if there is something i can do or update to resolve this. Any advice is welcome.

A couple of examples. Currently building a weather project using a Nodemcu, oled, couple of sensors etc. Because the node doesn't show up as a keyboard or mass storage etc, I can not get it to work. Of course I tried following a titillating tutorial, but it just confused me more. I tried running a blink program to see if one of the ports it was showing would work, but i just couldn't get it going.

Second, im trying to add some firmware to a pro mini for a synthesizer using ftdi and it just doesn't even show up. Could the issue be me running it out of a usb hub? Im grabbing at straws here anyway. Thanks for the patience. Hopefully you can help. Sorry i waited until my late 30s to grab a soldering iron and start learning. Oh well.

Not familiar with Pi. If you don't get a solution here, Raspberry has their own forum where you might be able to get some advice: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/

You should be able to test that quite easily by removing the hub  it looks like the Pi400 has a USB2 port (white); did you try that as well as the USB3 ports (blue)?

Youngster

Thanks for the quick response! I have a pile of projects that fall into both the arduino and pi camps, so getting going on both forums is sound advice for sure. Like i said, i bought a soldering iron a few months ago, and making has completely taken over. It is A LOT to take in though. Mostly doing little iot projects and retrogaming with my 14 year old, but I'm also getting into wearables with my wife, and building synthesizers and sequencers for me. Any suggestions for resources or ideas is greatly appreciated. I'll post back in a kittle while once i do some trouble shooting. Thanks again!
