Two good features of the new forum

Ok it's not perfect and I moaned a lot a couple of weeks ago. But these are two things which I think are good:

  • You can now report your own post to a mod. I just tested this and got a PM back from Leo. So if you mispost, you can ask for it to be moved. Or if you're just testing some feature, you can ask for the thread to be zapped. (It used to be that if you tried to report your own post you got a message suggesting your sanity was not up to the mark.)
  • The new way to do hyperlinks is at last in line with 21st century thinking where you can easily have a link with different narrative text without resorting to editing the markup. (I'm not madly keen on the link colour though: it's not really distinctive, but no biggy)

I just tested this and got a PM back from Leo.

Leo must be getting more notifications than I am, being zero in my case. So I'm glad someone replied.

Now list what you don't like/does not work about the new forum and see what list is longest. :smiling_imp:

In an effort to be positive ...

I very much like the select option on Code Boxes as I find it very much easier to make sense of code when I put it in my editor. For example I can highlight all occurrences of a variable to find out where it is defined or to see if a variable name is used globally and locally.

Yes, the select option is good.

Speaking as a user (as opposed to admin or mod who have extra requirements) there are a few things I prefer about the new forum, readable colour scheme and formatting buttons in quick reply are two that spring to mind.

And to balance that I think there are only two bad things left to be fixed (to me anyway) and they are notifications and new posts.

So we have 2 each way, unfortunately the good items while nice are largely cosmetic, whereas the two bad issues are pretty much show stoppers, these are such large issues that IMO the forum is barely usable at present.

I'm sure they will be fixed, and then we will have a real nice place to hang out.

And yes, should I start responding to technical posts again the "select" option on code boxes will be very useful.

Rob

I'm just responding to posts which I stumble across. Since I don't get notified of any replies to my replies, I have no idea who is waiting for a follow-up.

Likewise, and then usually just a post that doesn't really need a follow up. I am keeping a few threads open in tabs so I can keep track but that's it.

Well now! Links are now underlined and thus much more obvious. Good stuff.

Perhaps that is why links are identified that way in pure unadulterated HTML. Another wheel has been reinvented.
