Two row lcd display has some weird "lines"

I am using this image as reference for the wiring:

The problem I seem to be having is that there are 3 "lines" that are not displaying the text.

Even when I increase the contrast, the problem remains:

Here's the wiring. The bottom right component is the potentiometer.

I am using the built-in liquid-crystal library by the way.
Is this something that can be fixed or is the lcd broken?

Looks like faulty connections between the LCD driver chip and the LCD. You might be able to fix it by taking the glass part off and cleaning the contacts. If that fails, time to get a new LCD.

Yep, that was the issue. Opened it up, cleaned it up and then made some sort of diy pressure applier so that everything made contact. Thanks for the tip!
