My question is ...
If RX and/or TX must be PWM pin or can be simple digital IO pins.
The datasheet of the library is saying 'digital IO', but I'm just asking here to make sure ....

Digital. The examples use pin 12 for instance. It does use timer1 internally, but not for PWM.
