I am building an ultrasonic transmitter using prowave 400fs080 .It offers 360 degree beam directivity . I have got the datasheet( http://www.datasheetlib.com/datasheet/1154043/400fs080_pro-wave-electronics.html ) of the transducer and it says that the maximum drive voltage is 150 vp-p for burst and the resonant frequency is 40khz. To produce such a signal ,I thought of using an opamp(741) multivibrator to produce the 40 khz square wave(Vpp - 24v) and connecting it to a primary of step up transformer(24v -120v).Will this work and what would be the current needed to drive the transducer.I cannot find the minimum or maximum current rating in the datasheet .how will the drive voltage and current affect the transmission .
I think you need a +/- 75V power supply , because you need two rails. I don't think 150v pk to pk for your driver means 0 to 150.
I think it means +/- 75V. , like an audio power amp, only double the frequency. Maybe someone else can vefify that .

This is a simple problem - we used to do things like this all the time with vacuum tubes.Using semiconductors, you will need high voltage transistors such as 2N5401 and/or 2N5551 - you can also use high voltage CMOS transistors. You will also need a power supply either single ended 130-150VDC or +/- 80VDC, depending on what mode of amplification you use.
A class A amplifier could be used with the single ended 130-150VDC power supply, or class AB or class B with the +/- 80VDC power supply.
Just take the output of your 40kHz oscillator, and run it through the power amplifier outlined above. You can find descriptions and schematics of the various classes of amplifiers by doing a Google search.

I had a similar problem with my masters project. I used the HIP4080A (high voltage full bridge driver) with the SI3474 MOSFET transistors. You need a single 75V supply and connect the ultrasonic transducer to the outputs of the full bridge (not to ground).
It worked great.
I don't know how much sound pressure you need. Driving the 400FS080 with 29V (= 58Vpp) gives you already a lot of sound pressure at 40kHz.
In that case you could also use the integrated full bidge L6225 which works up to 52V (-> 104Vpp).
The voltage was generated with a MAX1771 boost converter.
