Unable to plug portenta into raspberry pi with usb a to c cable

I have tried both 64 bit raspberry pi 4 and 32 bit raspberry pi 2b and 2 different usb cables (amazon p/n B09FYVD6B5). Both with os < 1 year old. When I plug it into pi2b it does now power up the portenta so I connected the VIN from the portenta breakout board to +5v. The led flashes green after a double reset.

In all cases I get the error "Cannot enable, Maybe usb cable is bad?" on dmesg on the pi.

I can plug same cable into my windows 11 pc and the portenta enumerates as com10 with hardware id "USB\VID_2341&PID_035B&REV_0200&MI_01"

Has anyone gotten the portenta h7 lite to plug into a raspberry pi?

I got it to work if I added a 4 port usb hub. Not ideal but obviously a software os issue.

The developers for raspberry pi os believe there is something wrong with the bootloader usb negotiation code. Even though it connects to pc, and connects to pi if there is a usb hub in the middle. Would it help if I sent you a raspberry pi and cable for you to test?

What do I need to do to get this fixed? Having to add a usb hub to make it work seems klunky

This problem was solved by supplying 5.1v at 2 amps to raspberry pi. This issue is now closed
