Unable to set com-state

We have been programming an Arduino Nano for a couple weeks. This evening, we started getting these errors.

We have tried replugging the Nano into different ports on the computer. We get COM5, COM6 and COM7, but they all fail the same way.

We tried restarting the IDE (1.8.19), and rebooting the machine. No luck.

Nothing has changed. It worked last night, but not tonight. It has been working correctly for the last two weeks on this particular program. None of the existing answers seem to address this behavior. We get the hardware plug/unplug sounds from Windows (10) when we change the connection.

I cannot actually see the chip; my student is some distance away and we use Skype.

May we assume that these Nanos are clones with CH340? If yes, see if Port monitor error: command 'open' failed: Invalid serial port. Could not connect to COM serial port - #49 by ptillisch does solve the issue.

Famous last words  Driver update?
