Underwater WSN

Hi,

I am new to Arduino. Could someone give me advice on what boards and sensors i can use from Arduino for this project. I would like to have a wireless sensor network under water, hence couple of sensors that can communicate with each other underwater (probably using acoustic) and with the base above water.

Thanks
Bana

I don't know anything about underwater communication. Is Infra Red an option - that is easy with an Arduino.

Is Infra Red an option

No, not really - red is one of the first colours to be absorbed by water.

About 1/3rd the way down is where it starts getting good.

From the depths (pun intended) of my ignorance, does that suggest the UV would work?

Only in the Black Sea.

Chapter and verse (and worse).

Does all that mean that visible light would be best?

I'd say no light is good in water, except in very controlled conditions.
Even in very shallow water, suspended particles cause scattering, and if the particles are anything like the lake I train in, conditions can go from 10m visibility to can't-see-hand-in-front-of-face visibility in the space of a careless fin kick or dropped flashlight, and that's in no more than 10m depth.

Sound is the best communications method underwater. I've read that whales can communicate over thousands of miles that way.

I am always amazed that Herons can catch fish in muddy water.

Low Frequency RF

I don't think herons have evolved that yet

How many posts can the regulars get in before the OP comes back?

Thanks everyone! Specially with the document from Chagrin.

Acoustic seems to be the best option.
Appreciate it.

Whew. I was starting to think it was completely overlooked.
