i am working on a washing machine project , i managed to control the speed of the universal motor but when i fix the motor on low speeds it does work but stumbles a lot . what could be the reason for that ? and what solution do i have ?
Read the specs of your motor and compare them tol your setup. Probably you operate outside the specs.
Are you running the universal motor on DC or AC? As suggested, look at the name plate or specifications for the motor and you will see the design speed of the motor. vary 20% from that will make the motor do just what you described!
I know the problem could very well be the fact that there is an in balance of weight either in the motor or washing machine itself (The inside metal thing that spins). I had this very same problem with a milkshake machine that was going balistic and shaking allover the place when I would start it. Though, I could not figure out how to fix it and secure the motor and shaft in place. The solution would be maybe to make sure everything is equal in weight and to make sure the motor parts, especially the shaft are cleanly on.
Are you aware of the differences between a series wound "universal" motor, a shunt wound motor and a permanent magnet motor?
i am running it on AC . and yes i am giving it only 25% of the original input .

How? With what? Some triac setup? Mechanic gears?

So how much of a complete AC cycle does the problem appear? You need to understand this setup will NOT be a linear speed control because the missing part of the cycle is where most of the motor power is generated.
What kind of zero detector? Something like in SSR or some arduino code with interrupts and phase timing?
