UNO R3 Not Detected - OSX 10.9

I've tried the solutions on many other posts and have had no success.

I have a new three new UNO R3 boards (bought from separate vendors) and I'm unable to get OSX to detect them. I've also tried Linux. I've tried with and without external power (9V battery). I've tried multiple USB cables and ports on my machines. Despite this, I don't see any new USB device under /dev or under 'Tools -> Serial Port' when I connect my board.

Please help.

Holy cow! I think it was my USB cables. I tried a 3rd cable and now it's working. I successfully downloaded 3 programs in a row and then switched back to the cable that came with the Arduino Starter kit and it stopped working.
