Unrecognised Signature (Gammon tools)

Hi guys,

I've got an ATMEGA328P-PU running in a breadboard and I'm able to write sketches to it by popping out the chip from my Uno and wiring it up to the right pins. It's running with a 16MHz crystal at 5V.

I want to get into doing 3.3V projects but I've been unable to get Nick Gammon's tools working. The chip is back in the Uno to do that, the sketch is written to the Uno, and I monitor on serial monitor. The detector returns this:

Atmega chip detector.

Is this indicative of a dodgy chip, or a different version? All my wiring is absolutely fine (checked 4-5 times now, plus it works fine and runs sketches OK). Anyone got any ideas of what I can try?

Oh, appears the received data is different every single time. Can't be good.

For everyone’s information I tried to burn 8MHz with the ArduinoISP sketch instead and this worked fine shrug
