Up date my IDE

Hello:

I have some question about the Arduino IDE up dates. First when I bring up a blank sketch at the top of the sketch I see Arduino 1.0.1 I think this is the rev. number that I have loaded on my computer.
#2 I think that the latest rev. is now 1.8.1. To what rev. should I up date my IDE? And how should it be done? I am using a Windows 7 Computer.

Correct. That is extremely outdated.

No. It's 1.8.9, as clearly shown on the downloads page:

1.8.9

how should it be done?

  • Open this page: http://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software
  • Click on the "Windows Installer, for Windows XP and up" link.
  • You will now be taken to a donation page. If you like, you can make a donation here to support further work to improve the Arduino IDE. If you don't want to donate, you can click "Just Download".
  • Wait for the download to finish.
  • Make sure you don't have anything irreplaceable saved to your Arduino IDE installation folder. Anything you have saved to that folder will be lost when you install the new version. Ideally, you would not have saved anything to this folder, but some people do. Note that the contents of your sketchbook folder (shown at File > Preferences > Sketchbook location) will not be affected by the update, so you don't need to worry about the sketchbook, only the IDE installation folder.
  • Run the downloaded file.
