Uploading Arduino Mini Pro

Just received arduino mini Pro 5V 16MHz which of course comes with no USB plug to upload... I assumed this would be a simple case of wiring some wires from a USB to the TX and RX pins (please forgive my newbie innocence)

Can't seem to find any solid answer after a few hours on forums and google. It appears USB has pinout has a (data +) and a (data -) Am I able to use these to upload sketches, or is there another way.

Cheers in advance.

Luke

You need a usb to ttl serial converter. Sparkfun do one as a breakout board, or there is an ftdi cable to do the same thing.

The ftdi cable does not do auto reset when uploading to the arduino, you have to press the reset button manually. As a noob you will probably get caught by this and go round and round in circles for ages trying to upload your first program.

When I can find a link to these bits I will post it here.

Here is the Sparkfun link http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9115

And the cable http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=9718

Thanks Jabber, very helpful. It appears I can pick up this unit cheaper than a cable...

Not totally new to Arduino :o) I do have Mega, and it's the best fun ever. But find it annoying to disconnect a really cool project to start another. I figure at about AUD$22 for the Mini Pro I can prototype with the Mega the modify and hardwire cool projects on the Mini.
