Uploading sketch and serial communication with Arduino Pro Mini

Hello,

I have some problems/issues programming an Arduino Pro Mini 5V with ATMega 328 running at 16MHz. For uploading a sketch I use a USB Serial Light Adapter from DFRobot (http://goo.gl/qWTSR), it has a jumper to sellect either 3.3V or 5V as VCC. The problem: When I set the jumper to 5 V it powers the Arduino Pro Mini but I can't upload a sketch or use it for serial communication. It only works with the jumper on 3.3V. The boad is definitly the 5V version, I tested it by supllying it with 9V on the RAW pin, the output on VCC or a digital pin set HIGH was 5 V.

Is this normal or am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help or comment

So program at 3.3V, then use the Promini at 5. No idea why the USB/Serial adatper won't work at 5V.

thats what I am doing, but I wonder why this is or if it's common And I dont understand why the Arduino is running with 3.3V instead of 5V

DFRobot,The Chinese--- must be their another quest to build that Ultra Cheap stuff , i have experienced their things failing in just 10-15 days of working even in case of high priced things, I recently bought a UNIVERSAL LIPO charger and it never charged anything any battery and it claims to be Universal.

so I geus its jst a faulty USB to serial Adapter, maybe I go for a europe made one...still wondering why the arduino works with only 3.3 V....

It's working Vice-Versa, Traditionally uC's need high power to get into programming mode like PIC's (well without bootloader) but this is programming at 3.3v and vomiting at 5v that's strange ,ok so which one USB to Serial Adapter are you using?

I am using the "USB Serial Light Adapter (Arduino Compatible)" http://goo.gl/qWTSR and the original Arduino Pro Mini , an original from Sparkfun

i also see a ICSP header(6 pin) just solder it and put in 6 male headers, it can be the circuitry is fine at ICSP and gives you 5v.

i could try that, but isn't icsp header on the usb/serial adapter for (re)programming the ATMega8U on the Adapter?

Ya you are right , that fact got off my mind, its just this that when problems occur mind tries to look for every possible alternative and sometimes its out of feasibility.

I am just wondering: How do you connect those?

The guide doesnt say anything about using the serial light adapter: http://arduino.cc/en/Guide/ArduinoProMini

Id like to use the adapter, because i already have it.

Is there a howto? I have the 2,3V variant (http://www.watterott.com/de/Wattuino-pro-mini-3V3-8MHz) and the "original" usb serial light adapter.

Hi,

On the Pro Mini from sparkfun there are marks written on the board (and on the USB adaptor), unfortunately there are no markings on the Wattuino Board from Watterot. But you are lucky: The third picture on the product page (the drawing) has the color markings, match these with your USB to Serial adapter and it should work.

LG / best regards and Happy Holiday

Thanks,

I'll try that!
